Pittsburgh forms part of the Contra Costa County on the eastern side. It is still part of the San Francisco Bay Area, located at the outer portion. At the last census of 2000, there were 56,769 residents composed of 17,741 households living in the city.


Pittsburgh’s history goes back a long way. The earliest record of history was in 1839 when the Mexican government granted almost 10,000 acres to Jose Antone Mesa and Miguel Jose Garcia. It was named shortly thereafter named New York of the Pacific, possibly because the man who laid out the town, Colonel J.D. Stevenson, was a native of New York. It was soon known as New York Landing and thrived on fishing and canning industries. Coal was discovered in the hills three miles south of town. In 1903, the town was renamed Black Diamond. The name of the town was changed in 1911 to Pittsburgh shortly after the opening of Columbia Geneva Steel in 1906. The name was in reference to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with the ’h’ being dropped for simplicity in spelling.

From its humble roots the city became industrial centre. Areas have grown into a pleasant community of landscaped parks, recreational facilities, shopping centres, affordable housing and planned business and commercial development. House prices have dropped significantly attracting home buyers from within and outside of the city. Home sales have doubled in 2008 compared with 2007. This is also where Camp Stoneman was put up to support US troops during World War II and the Korean War. When it was built back in 1942 it had a terrific impact on the city. It eventually closed down and the land allocated was converted to residential and commercial use.

There is a golf course in Pittsburgh; it is called The Pittsburgh Delta View Golf Course. It is now run by the city. It has a back nine that was designed by Alastair MacKenzie, the architect who designed the Augusta National Golf Course where the Masters championship is held.
